The South African Team for Lusse:

AttieH&S160x129px.jpgAttie Jonker – Married to Lucy, they have two sons, aged 4 & 2.  Attie grew up in a gliding environment as his father, Tienie, is a glider pilot.  At a young age both Attie (and brother Uys) would help Tienie with glider maintenance and repairs as well as making their own models.   By profession, Attie is a lecturer at Potchefstroom University.  He will be flying the Jonker designed and manufactured JS1 18m. class glider, which has already seen several contest wins both here in SA and overseas.  Attie started gliding in approx. 1984, and first competed internationally in the Club Class Worlds in Musbach, Germany in 2002.

Laurens Goudriaan
– Married to Suzy, who will be crewing at Lusse for him.  They have three grown-up daughters as well as two grandchildren.  Laurens went into the SAAF before joining his parents in the family business that operates mines, crushing plants, haulage, and so forth.  He is based in Kimberley and some of his own family now work for him.  His first participation in a WGC was in 1981 at Paderborn when he was the first S.African to win a day.  His participation in subsequent WGC’s has resulted in his being placed in the top 10 on several occasions.

QuintinH&S109x160px.jpgQuintin Maine – Married to Heather, who will be crewing at Lusse for him.  They have two grown up children as well as two grandchildren.  By profession Quintin has a plastic pigments factory which his son is now managing.  Quintin is currently Chairman of the biggest gliding club in SA, Magalies Gliding Club.  He was team manager for the S.African team at the 27th WGC held at Mafikeng, and  competed in Eskilstuna, Sweden flying in the Open class.  In Lusse he will be flying in the 18m. class.

Carol Clifford
, team manager – grew up in a gliding family with both parents active in the movement in England.  My father represented England in several WGCs before his untimely death and was World Champion with Nick Goodhart in 1958 in the 2-seater class.  Married to Bobby, a Springbok, several times over and am a mother of two grown-up daughters.  Have been involved with gliding for a life-time, currently Secretary of Magalies Gliding Club and Treasurer of SSSA.  Have attended many WGCs as crew for Bobby and other pilots and been Team Manager since 1993.  To assist with the costs of such involvement, by profession I am a sales consultant for a website offering all Industrial Relations information.

SA Team interviews
 ey_sven_olivier.jpg
In an exclusive interview for the SSSA Sven says ...

"I am flying an LS8, EX – the same LS8 I flew in Poland in 2003. It belongs to Ulf Dallmann, who will also be my crew and the SA Team Captain. Ulf was my crew in Sweden and was a member of the German team. He was team captain for Germany in the 2007 Europeans. I could not ask for a better crew captain, glider or support.
I am going over on 20 June and will be flying from Rieti soon thereafter (we are stopping over at the Schempp Hirth factory on the way down). I / or Ulf will be doing some personal postings on my blog and I will be carrying a SPOT messenger – it has a tracking feature and the public can access the tracks. I will post more details later. I gained some experience flying in the pre-Worlds last year, but looking at the entries, most of the pilots are VERY well experienced at flying Rieti. They will have a distinct advantage, especially if conditions become difficult (in good weather I think the local advantage may not be as great)"

In another SSSA exclusive,  hy_-_andrew_bester.jpgAndrew tells us of how he got this far and some of what it takes to plan for a World Gliding Championship ....

"Some planning started more than a year ago when I was chosen as part of the squad to Tswalu for training by Andy Davis.  Since then I have made sure that my ranking improved and I get chosen for the team.
When it became evident that I should make the team, friends of mine in
Germany, offered me the use of their plane and also to crew for me.  This made the Worlds possible for me and my budget.
January 2008 - it was final I made it onto the team.

After lengthy discussions as to whether it would be better for fly in the German Worlds or the Italian Worlds, we decided to rather go for the
Italy (Club Class) option.  Although I am ranked high enough to make into the 15m class, I realised that I severly lack experience with flying with water and also have no experience flying an ASW 27 or similar plane.  Fortunately my German friends agreed to this and the planning for the trip began.
This whole experience involved a great deal of arranging in terms of, license validations, insurance for the glider, travel insurance for me, weight and balance certificate, airworthiness, visas, currency, accommodation and travel arrangements to name just a few.  Loggers need current calibration certificates, a class 2 medical has to done in order for my license to be ICAO compliant.

More recently we did a trip to
Cape Town to obtain our visas.

At this stage it is all systems go and I can now start to do my mental training in preparation for the worlds.

I will be flying my German friends, Conrad and Sabine’s ASW20 A with competition no 67. This is the first time the 20's are allowed in club class.”
